Behavioural problems associated with sensory integration dysfunction

Kids having sensory dysfunction contributes to behavioural problems as we know all information’s gathered in central nervous system from the receptors located in various parts of body. And central nervous system further process information and give response to stimulations. But in sensory dysfunction brain is disorganised. They have following symptoms

  • Usually high activity level- person will be hyperactive and always be on the go mode. Sitting span is poor and very quick tempered and easily got excited.
  • Usually low activity level-very slow in moving and in gaze. Fatigue easily, won't take any initiative and show little interest in the world.
  • Person may lack self-control and unable to stop from starting position on activity. Like kid will keeps on walking and won't see wall in front of him, pour juice until it spills.
  • Child get distracted easily. Lack attention having attention span. Child is disorganised and forgetful
  • Poor eye hand coordination

e.g. problem in holding pen and preparing art project.

  • Problems with muscle tone and motor coordination

body may be tensed or floppy. Person will be clumsy, careless and accident prone.

  • Problems in motor planning

person won't be able to organise, carry out any task because of inability to know how to move body parts to perform given task.

  • Person will be stubborn and uncooperative. When it is time to come for dinner, going in bathroom or change from one activity to another.
  • Self-regulation problems- person won't be able to calm down once aroused.
  • Learning difficulty- will be having various learning problems like not able to memorize things, events or given task. And having difficulty in learning new skills and concepts.
  • Social problems- child will be socially less interactive. He will be having difficulty in making friends and no peer group interaction and communication with people in the home, school or in society.
